2017 Summer Wrapup

August 10, 2017

Oh baby we had a great time at the new venue this year and we hope you did too. We had some great feedback from the survey and in a continued effort to let you know what's going on we'd like to share some of the thoughts we had from your brains and ours. We won't be touching on EVERYTHING but we'll hit some of the more common points that kept coming up not only for this last event but some in previous years.

Firstly I want to say thank you to everyone who left awesome notes for us offering their support and praise for what we do. It's a true team effort and it's always great to see our hard work getting noticed.

This was on most people's radars either one way or another it seemed. Some of you loved it, some of you thought it could be better. The addition of the helpdesk definitely helped. This was a first for us and we will be looking for ways to improve it. We had a couple of comments regarding communication BEFORE the event. This is tough, as we have a myriad of ways for people to get in touch with us: facebook, lanfest website, this website, email, twitter, discord. The best way to get ahold of us is to hit us up on discord as someone is usually around and will get back to you or at least let the right person know. We will continue to provide updates in as many places as possible. But checking this site for the latest and discord are your best bets.

Obviously this is a gaming event, and there's always room to improve. What we learned this event is that in addition to our tournaments, people really just want to get together around a TV or projector and have some fun. Expect more of that moving forward. Now that we're approaching the 300 person mark, we will have some more confidence running multiple tournaments at the same time. At the very least running a tournament alongside some couch game or console game.

We had some requests for other games as well. This is super tough because we can't play EVERYTHING, and we don't want to do the same games event after event. We usually stick with 2 to 3 games we know lots of people will play in (Overwatch, CS:GO, LoL) and go with 2-3 more that rotate around and come in and out of place. We don't have anything concrete yet, but expect Rocket League and some old school FPS game(s) to make a comback next event.

If I might add: our event is not intended to be super competitive. We had many problems with this years ago. This is supposed to be casual and fun. That's why prizes are trophies and not gear. If we did gear people would hold us to much more strict formats and seriously complain when some server blip happens or some config setting isn't to "MLG Standards." We simply don't want this sort of atmosphere. It adds a ton of work and stress that are simply not for us.

I was tempted to put this first so I'd be sure more people read it, as it continues to remain a big talking point for everyone. We do everything we can to make sure everyone is fed and isn't gouged at the counter. This year we had the fairgrounds provide a concession stand for us. It got mixed reviews. Some people loved it, some people didn't. Some people wanted more variety, healthier options. This feedback will be handed off to the concession people (who are not directly employed by the fairgrounds FWIW).

On Pizza

Because of the agreement with the concession stand folks we were unable to provide pizza like we normally do. This came up a couple times but that's really the long and short of it. We simply didn't really have much of a choice here. We will continue to see if we can make this happen.

Were gross and we know. This is just sort of how it happened. We'll be sure to make sure this is talked about with the fairgrounds.

Other random thoughts

  • We had 2 people unable to make the event due to personal reasons at the last minute.
  • I have that guys speaker somewhere that he lost (aj@massivelan.com)
  • The music player probably isn't going anywhere but will be improved
  • The intranet site should get some better love for tournaments
  • We will try to post tournaments a bit earlier to give people a chance to find teams
  • We have some a pretty awesome announcement about seating and such moving forward but it's not quite ready to be released yet. Let the speculation begin!
